Using our Skills to Serve our Community
Asher’s IT Department Partners with the Ticket To Dream Foundation
At Asher College, our community is so important to us. Our mission is to train students for the careers that are in high demand in their own communities, so they can work where they want to live, and be of service to the communities they call home. Each of our three campuses strives to be a positive neighbor, and to give back in any way we can. Recently, the Information Technology department at Asher College Sacramento was recognized for their support and engagement with a great community organization- the Ticket to Dream foundation.
The Ticket to Dream foundation is dedicated to creating hope and opportunity for foster children across the nation, so they can just be kids. One important way the Ticket to Dream foundation supports foster youth is through supplying access to laptop computers. School supplies and access to computers are critical so these youth have the tools they need to succeed in school. The Ticket to Dream foundation has a mission to support as many foster youth as possible by distributing thousands of refurbished laptops. These laptops are a critical support tool for the youths, enabling them to complete homework and access online classes.
With the COVID pandemic, the Ticket to Dream organization felt that it was more important than ever to get laptops into the hands of kids to ensure they could access classes during remote distance learning. With less than 60% of foster youth having consistent access to a computer, the digital divide has been growing during the pandemic. In order to fulfill their mission, Ticket to Dream turned to Asher College for support. After a generous corporate donor supplied the organization with high quality used laptops, Asher College’s PC Repair team was able to perform the necessary work to prepare the computers for distribution.
Asher College was proud to be able to help make this great organization’s mission possible during this challenging time. The team of students at Asher College Sacramento’s IT department helped to refurbish over 900 laptop computers, wiping the hard drives clean and installing brand new software. Each of the laptops underwent a rigorous cleaning process and received a new decal to cover up any scratches outside of the laptop. The Asher PC repair team turned out more than 900 of these perfectly refurbished laptops, ready to be placed by the Ticket to Dream foundation into the hands of a foster youth in need.
Asher College’s Director of Marketing, Kim Gasper said of the partnership: “In an age where connection is more important than ever, Asher College is so happy to continue our partnership with Ticket to Dream in 2021. In addition to the hands-on experience for our students, we truly value the opportunity to give back to the community and support the efforts and vision of Ticket to Dream.”
The Executive Director of the Ticket to Dream foundation, Gina Davis said, “Taking on a refurbishing project like this is something Ticket to Dream could never have handled on our own. But Asher College and their passionate students made this possible. They have helped over 900 foster youth have access to the computer they need to do well in school and build job skills, while gaining hands-on tech skills during the refurbishment. It’s the perfect partnership!” Even COVID couldn’t stop this great partnership. Davis continued, “When COVID ceased in-person classes at Asher, their team pivoted with us to find safe ways to keep these laptops coming as the need for laptops is greater than ever.”
