What Kind of Healthcare Training Programs Does Asher College Offer?

At Asher College, students interested in entering the healthcare field can choose between three different medical career training programs:

Health Information Specialist

Designed to be completed in as little as 16 months!* In the Health Information Specialist program, students learn how to collect, maintain, and analyze health information, while adhering to HIPAA, Federal and State regulations concerning confidentiality in the medical field. Students also learn how to utilize healthcare software applications, and record and manage insurance billing and reimbursement activities.

The Health Information Specialist program is an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program. Students complete six General Education classes (4 weeks each), including Critical Thinking or Psychology, Business Communication, Business Math, Introduction to Business, Principles of Management or Leadership, and American Government. Students in Nevada also complete a short Nevada Constitution course. Obtaining an AAS degree demonstrates to potential employers that you are ready for supervisory or management responsibilities.

Graduates of this program will receive a Health Information Specialist Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, and will be prepared to test for professional certifications through the National Healthcareer Association, including the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA), the Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS), and the Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS).

* Full time program length (24 hours/week) = 16 months; ¾ time = 19 months; Half time = 25 months.

Medical Billing and Coding

Designed to be completed in as few as 11 months! In the Medical Billing and Coding program, students learn medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems, and medical billing.

Graduates of this program will receive a Medical Billing and Coding program certificate, and will be prepared to test for professional certifications, including the National Healthcareer Association’s Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA), Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS), and Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS), and the AAPC’s Certified Professional Biller (CPB) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC-A)

Students in the Medical Billing and Coding program also have the option to take six General Education courses (4 weeks each), in order to earn their Associate of Applied Science (AAS), Medical Billing and Coding degree. AAS degree courses include Critical Thinking or Psychology, Business Communication, Business Math, Introduction to Business, Principles of Management or Leadership, American Government. Students in Nevada also complete a short Nevada Constitution course. An Associate degree can demonstrate to potential employers that you are ready for supervisory or management responsibilities based on the additional investment that you have made in your education.

* Full time program length (24 hours/week) = 11 months; ¾ time = 15 months; Half time = 22 months.

Pharmacy Technician

Designed to be completed in as few as 12 months! In the Pharmacy Technician program, students learn essential skills to be employable in entry-level positions, including how to fill prescriptions under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, utilize relevant software applications, recognize the classifications of drugs and scheduled drugs, understand brand, generic, and OTC (over the counter) medications, adhere to HIPAA privacy regulations, and comprehend and perform prescription insurance claims procedures. The Pharmacy Technician program includes an externship allowing for hands-on real time experience within approved pharmacies.

Graduates of this program will receive a Pharmacy Technician program certificate, and will be prepared to take the nationally recognized Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) proctored by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), while also applying for state licensure upon completion of their program.

Students in the Pharmacy Technician program also have the option to pursue an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree, which includes additional general education courses, including Critical Thinking, Business Math, and Business Communication. AAS Degree students may test for their Pharmacy Technician certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), apply for state licensure with the state’s Board of Pharmacy, and begin working in their field while still finishing up the additional courses for the degree.
