A career in the healthcare industry is a promising option; as the marketplace for healthcare expands in the United States, and more people have medical insurance and seek out medical treatment, the demand for healthcare services is growing. Pharmacies are an important component in the healthcare system, and pharmacy technicians are essential to the success of pharmacies. Working hand-in-hand with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians are responsible for helping licensed pharmacists fill and dispense medications prescribed to patients by medical professionals. These healthcare professionals establish and maintain patient record files, submit insurance claim forms, and manage prescription and over-the-counter medication inventories. Pharmacy technicians often interact directly with patients, and must adhere to HIPAA, Federal and State regulations concerning confidentiality.
At Asher College, you can train to be certified pharmacy technician in as few as 45 weeks! A Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) recognized education/training program, Asher’s AAS Pharmacy Technology program teaches students the essential knowledge and practical skills necessary to be successful in entry-level positions. Through hands-on training and professional instruction, students learn the skills to:
- Fill prescriptions under the direct supervision of a pharmacist
- Utilize relevant software applications
- Recognize the classifications of drugs and scheduled drugs
- Understand brand, generic, and OTC (over the counter) medications
- Adhere to HIPAA privacy regulations
- Comprehend and perform insurance procedures
Asher College’s Pharmacy Technician program is an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program, so there are also general education requirements to complete the degree. Required general education courses include American Government, Business Math, and Business Communication. Students will be prepared to test for the Pharmacy Technician certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and apply for state licensure with the Board of Pharmacy in the state in which their campus is located.
