Are you naturally inclined to computers and technology? Have you considered a career in Information Technology? But what exactly are these certifications, and do you need them to begin a successful IT career? At Asher College, we train students like you for success in IT careers such as Computer and Network Technician, IT Network Engineer, and Network Support Specialist. Asher is a CompTIA Academy Partner, and our IT programs train students for these important industry certifications. Read on to find out more about CompTIA, and how Asher College can prepare you for success as an IT professional.

The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is a non-profit trade association founded in 1982. CompTIA is an industry leader and IT professionals with CompTIA certifications demonstrate to potential employers their advanced level of knowledge and skill. If you are considering a career in IT, it is worthwhile to find out more about the certifications available.  Asher College can prepare you for the following CompTIA certifications:

CompTIA: A+ Certification

The CompTIA A+ certification is recognized throughout the industry as the best way for an individual to demonstrate that s/he has learned the foundations of PC support and administration. Asher’s Computer and Network Technician program is designed to prepare students for this certification by teaching students basic hardware and computer repair skills. Students learn to build and repair a computer, install, configure, and maintain a variety of Windows operating systems in a stand-alone, workgroup, and domain environment.

CompTIA: Network+ Certification

The CompTIA Network+ certification covers network technologies, installation and configuration, media and topologies, management, and security. The CompTIA Network+ is a vendor neutral certification that proves an IT professional’s expertise in managing, maintaining, troubleshooting, installing and configuring basic computer networks. Asher College prepares students to test for the Network+ certification by teaching the foundations of networking, as well as configuring, administering, and repairing complex computer networks.

CompTIA: Security+ Certification

The CompTIA Security+ exam covers the important foundational principles for securing a network and managing risk. Access control, identity management and cryptography are important topics on the exam, as well as selection of appropriate mitigation and deterrent techniques to address network attacks and vulnerabilities. Security concerns associated with cloud computing, BYOD and SCADA are addressed in the Security+ exam. The CompTIA Security+ Certification demonstrates the student’s ability to secure networks, computers and servers. While there is no required prerequisite, the CompTIA Network+ certification is recommended before taking the Security+ exam. At Asher, students learn security concepts, tools, and procedures to react to security incidents and anticipate security risks so they can take action to guard against them.

CompTIA: Linux+ Certification

Linux+ is not an entry level certification, and students interested in this exam should first have their CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications. The Linux+ certification demonstrates mastery of the Linux interface and functions of the operating system. In order to be certified students must pass the XKO-004 exam, which focuses on the following topics: security, kernel modules, storage & visualization, device management at an enterprise level, git & automation, networking & firewalls, server side & command line, server (vs. client-based) coverage, troubleshooting and SELinux.

At Asher, the IT career programs are designed to prepare students for the CompTIA certifications listed above. Asher students learn to set up Internet connections and establish different types of networks like LAN (local area network) or WAN (wide area network). Students learn how to establish and keep routers and servers functioning, and, when systems malfunction, how to find solutions quickly without paralyzing the other computers and equipment in the network. Asher’s programs also teach the necessary interpersonal “soft skills” by showing students how to provide help and advice to people and organizations using computer software or equipment. Upon completion of the program, graduates are thoroughly prepared for employment as entry-level IT professionals, in roles such as helpdesk technician, computer systems/desktop support technician, and network systems administrator. Asher College offers several different IT career programs; for a complete listing of all programs and for program details and lengths, please visit the IT career programs page.
