Why Pursue Career Training?
Gallup Poll Finds Satisfaction Among Career School Grads
Gallup Research recently conducted an extensive poll titled Toward a Better Future: Exploring Outcomes of Attending Career Colleges and Universities. This study examined the success of career school graduates, and aimed to better understand the value of and satisfaction with career and vocational education. Gallup worked with the association of Career Education Colleges and Universities (CECU) to survey a representative sample of its member schools’ alumni about satisfaction with their education, experiences while enrolled at a CECU institution, career and life success outcomes. Asher College is a member of the Career Education Colleges and Universities (CECU) Association and Asher College President David Vice has served as the chair of this organization for the last three years.
The results of the study are based on the responses of 3,203 recent CECU alumni conducted in the Fall of 2018. Gallup compared these outcomes to a nationally representative sample of Associate Degree holders to evaluate outcomes of career education and training. According to the Gallop research, career school grads are happier, healthier, more diverse and more likely to be in a job related to their field of study compared to 2-year community college grads.
The Gallup study demonstrated that postsecondary career education provides a relevant learning track that helps graduates find meaningful work, which can provide a powerful pathway to financial independence. According to The Good Jobs Project, the United States has 30 million jobs that pay an average of $55,000 per year. These careers do not require a Bachelor’s degree, but usually do require the kind of career or vocational training that can be obtained through CECU schools such as Asher College.
The U.S. Department of Education reports that people with career and technical educations are actually slightly more likely to be employed than their counterparts with academic credentials, and are significantly more likely to be working in their fields of study. In addition, the Gallup poll found the majority of the CECU school member’s alumni report feeling successful in their lives after graduation. These alumni were more likely than their peers to have secured full-time employment and were also more likely than their peers to have found a job within just six months of graduation. The CECU school member’s alumni that were presently employed also reported a 62% increase in median personal earnings over their pre-career training education income.
In many areas, CECU school member’s alumni rated on par or better than their peers that graduated from community colleges with Associate Degrees. In fact, Gallup found that the majority of CECU alumni are more likely than recent Associate Degree holders to thrive in all elements of well-being. Gallup recognizes that well-being is associated with numerous positive health and employment outcomes, and categorizes well-being into five interrelated areas:
- Purpose Well-being: Liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals
- Social Well-being: Having supportive relationships and love in your life
- Financial Well-being: Managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security
- Community Well-being: Liking where you live, feeling safe and having pride in your community
- Physical Well-being: Having good health and enough energy to get things done daily
Overall, alumni of the CECU career training schools are more likely than their peers to be thriving in each individual well-being element, and are also more likely to be thriving in multiple areas of well-being.
The Gallup poll found that the majority of all CECU members alumni are satisfied with both the education and training they received from their school. The majority of CECU alumni also report satisfaction with how well the school prepared them for their career, and would recommend their school to others. A majority of them felt their school “was the perfect school for them,” and interestingly, satisfaction rates were highest among those who had previously attended a different post-secondary institution.
