Administrative healthcare services have long been an important part of our medical system, but as the American healthcare system modernizes this role has taken on an increasing importance and complexity. Heightened focus on health data and increasing digitization of medical records has led to a greater demand than ever before for skilled administrative healthcare specialists. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the medical billing and coding field is expected to grow 11% nationwide by 2028, creating over 23,000 new jobs in the next seven years. The BLS predicts Medical Records and Health Information Specialists to experience a similar rate of growth, and create a similar number of jobs, in the same time period. 

Asher College trains students for these rewarding administrative healthcare careers. Asher’s Medical Records Specialist program offers personalized instruction, technology resources, and hands-on training to prepare students for an administrative medical career in as few as 26 weeks. Students take courses in medical terminology, medical law and ethics, medical billing and reimbursement, and electronic health records, as well as classes designed to teach digital literacy, typing fundamentals, and more. Graduates of the program are prepared to find work in general practitioner or specialist medical offices, clinics and hospitals, home health agencies, nursing facilities, medical billing companies and more. 

Asher’s Health Information Specialist program is designed to be completed in as few as 39 weeks. Health Information Specialists are responsible for collecting, maintaining, and analyzing health information. Asher’s program prepares students for responsibilities in this field by teaching important skills ranging from medical front office, to advanced billing and basic coding. In the Health Information Specialist program, students learn to adhere to HIPAA, the Federal and State regulations concerning confidentiality in the medical field, utilize software applications to manage all aspects of computerized patient record keeping, including proper application of medical diagnosis, procedures, and billing information, and record and manage insurance billing and reimbursement activities, as well as knowledge of some medical coding. Students also develop the keyboarding skills and technical skills necessary in today’s computerized workplace, as well as the “soft” interpersonal skills needed in the medical field. 

Additionally, Asher offers a Medical Billing and Coding program that can be completed in as few as 41 weeks. At Asher, students learn comprehensive medical coding and billing procedures, current medical software, and trends in the insurance industry. Students learn medical terminology, medical billing and coding software, and how to prepare and file insurance claims and analyze benefits. Students who are interested in taking their education to the next level,  may take an additional six classes (4 weeks each) in order to earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Medical Billing and Coding. The additional courses include: Critical Thinking, Introduction to Business, Business Communication, Business Math, Principles of Management, American Government, and Nevada Constitution (Nevada students only).

All of Asher’s healthcare career programs provide hands-on, practical learning in a real-world setting. Faculty is experienced in their field and each student receives personalized, individualized attention and support. The Health Information SpecialistMedical Records Specialist, and Medical Billing and Coding programs are thorough and comprehensive, and prepare graduates for entry-level employment in their chosen field. Upon completion of the Medical Records Specialist program, Asher graduates will be prepared to test for one of the following certifications:

  • CMAA Certified Medical Administrative Assistant from the National Healthcareer Association
  • CEHRS Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist from the National Healthcareer Association

Students in the Health Information Specialist program will be prepared to sit for one of  the above, and the following exams as well:

  • CBCS Certified Billing & Coding Specialist from the  National Healthcareer Association
  • CPB-Certified Professional Biller from the AAPC

Students in the Medical Billing and Coding program will be prepared to sit for one of the above, or the following exam:

  • CPC-A Certified Professional Coder / AAPC
